Te Moana Nui | Takapuna Winter Lights was specially commissioned for the Takapuna Winter Lights Festival, on Hurstmere Road in Takapuna, from 29-31 July 2022. Te Moana Nui––which means “the great ocean” in te reo Māori––showcases magical worlds beneath the sea, filled with colourful whirlpools, fish, and taniwhas. And who better to provide the vision for this underwater world than pre-school children from the Campbell’s Bay Early Learning Centre (3-5 years old) and the Takapuna Primary School (5-10 years old). Te Moana Nui recognises our unique identity as an island nation. The world of Te Moana Nui continually changes, bringing the children’s drawings to life in one magical underwater realm after another. As a way to give back to the Takapuna community, the starting point for Te Moana Hui was about finding a way to enable Takapuna’s youngest children to participate in the magical realm of Winter Lights, not just as visitors but as contributing artists. Imagine the thrill of a pre-schooler seeing their own drawings brought to life and in dazzling arrays of animated colour! The music for Te Moana Nui was composed by Mark Johnson, while the ever-transforming, magical realm of the sea was created by Daniel Brown. The vision for Te Moana has been proudly handed over to the sense of wonder and magic held by the youngest members of our Auckland community.
