P\u016brerehua is the New Zealand te reo M\u0101ori word for ‘butterfly’ or ‘moth’. It is also the word for a traditional M\u0101ori musical instrument, a ‘bullroarer’, made of wood, stone or bone attached to a long string. In this light and sound installation, 3 butterflies (in the primary colours of blue, red and yellow) come together to produce over 150 butterflies (p\u016brerehua) in multiple, variegated colours and patterns, born to the sounds of this ancient M\u0101ori musical instrument (p\u016brerehua). They eventually explode into a celebration of colour, light, sound and magical wonder.<\/p>\n

“The kaitiaki (guardian) of the p\u016brerehua is T\u0101whirim\u0101tea, God of the Winds. The p\u016brerehua takes its name from the moth. Its sound is similar to the whirling and hovering sound of a moth’s wings as it flies and flits.
