RESEARCH PLATFORM<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

My design research explores Architecture and Dystopia | Design Intervention as Social Activism. This research challenges our built environment to arrive at new solutions to 21st century problems we are facing: sites transformed by rising sea levels, global warming, destructive strip mining; sites damaged by war, abandonment, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, and floods; sites responding to disenfranchised youth, marginalized populations, or diasporas; partially completed urban infrastructures or abandoned and dilapidated buildings resulting from economic recession. This research implicates meaning, narrative, allegory, and collective memory within the contexts of social history, economics, environmental resilience and cultural identity. It demands that my students, as representatives of the new generation, take a strong personal position on what it means to represent this generation. How can the history and decayed state of permanently scarred sites be proactively used in their rejuvenation? How can new approaches to rejuvenating a permanently scarred site foster new ways of thinking about the significance of decay, future growth and resilience?<\/p>\n

My design research installations investigate how neglected architectural and urban sites can be strategically revitalized by re-establishing critical links to lost environmental, cultural and mythological imperatives. They transform dilapidated or at-risk sites into rejuvenated public spaces by reconnecting them to their environmental, historical and cultural contexts. The resulting narratives are designed to challenge our perception of our built environment as well as its inhabitants. The impact of my annual collaborative design research in Rome since 2005 played a significant role in convincing the regional council that strategic application of environmental, cultural and historical imperatives is a viable cost-effective approach to culturally revitalizing derelict or neglected public spaces. As a result of this research relating to a neglected half-kilometer stretch of the Tiber River between the Sisto and Mazzini bridges, Rome has begun transforming this derelict site of our research into a permanent public space that is attracting thousands of visitors.<\/p>\n
